A Fraction Of The Whole
October 13th, 2009Okay I’m only about seventy pages in but I keep feeling like this is my favorite book ever. About every other page I just get overwhelmed. Amazing. Jeez this guy is so deeply wise and funny as hell.

UPDATE 10/14/09: I just had a friend ask me what he should read next. Alright, let me just say again, read this book. It is still blowing my mind every day. Amazing in every way. Best book ever. Holy.

Never heard of it, but I love intellectual humor. I’ll have to check it out sometime. Your other post is making me wanna bust out some of Poe’s rantings, er…I mean writings though tonight.
The second book i’ll buy after Jim The boy .quick, a post- it !.because it’s wise and funny and amazing to you, Courtney ! Thank you a lot again for sharing !
Lany, sweetie, you’ll love Edgar Poe i guess !
bisous love you!
Martine…bisous. I do love Edgar Allan Poe. He was truely amazing and his influence still holds so much power to this day. A lot of the poems that I’ve written are rather morbid and dreary, so I haven’t shared them with many people. That is simply because people would probably view me as truely “nuts”, and so I haven’t been as free in sharing them as I’d like to be. That is one of the many reasons I admire Poe so much. It’s because he wrote with such passion, and although some of his stuff was viewed as unfathomably insane and descriptively morbid, he was not afraid to share his work. I admire the fowardness in his intentions.
C,
You’re the 2nd person I know who has spoken highly of this book, so I’m moving it right to the top of my list. Once you’re done, check out EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED by Jonathan Safran Foer. It’s right up there with FARENHEIT 451, A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, GRAVITY’S RAINBOW, and ELECTRIC KOOL-ADE ACID TEST.
Happy reading!
Courtney and Joe…I haven’t had much time to sit down to read lately, but for a while, I was starting to enjoy the study of philosophy. I happened to come across a book (I don’t remember what is was called) that I really enjoyed. The book was by the late George Berkley. I found him to be a very interesting mind. Was wondering if any of you could reccommend anything similar that I might enjoy. Oh…and someone kinda shot down my dream of being a writer a few months ago. They said that with our technology with internet and audio and online books, that nobody hardly buys books anymore. Is this really true?
bought it at half.com
that’s a shame this disparition of books. Nowadays evrybody is watching TV, video games, Ipod, cell phones, internet. Gosh, i’m on my ass. I often baby sit children and the other day they asked what i like to do after school as a hobby. I answered i like to read a good book in my warm bed. they laughed ! They told me reading was fucking annoying and passé ! they are always playing on their “wii”. That’s amazing. What is more beautiful than reading and holding a great book ? Gosh, this new generation freak me out ! and what about writting ? well, fuck writting too ! that’s too pity. According to me these are the most important and safe values with music and we’re losing them.
thank you Courtney for sharing you read, what you like and what is important for you. That means a lot and it’s good to see people with great interests and generosity.
Lany … check out almost anything by Alain de Boton. My favorites of his include THE CONSOLATIONS OF PHILOSOPHY, and ON LOVE. Then there’s also Simone de Bouvoir (my personal favorite of all the existentialists). Her book, THE ETHICS OF AMBIGUITY, is phenomenal. She makes Camus look like a pig-headed dolt.
Joe…thank you so much for your reply. I will definitely have to check them out, as they sound very interesting. Courtney…I must’ve missed your update thismorning when I put in my last comment. I apologize for asking a redundant question of you, when the answer was obviously there under the photo. Okay…I’m convinced now. Along with the books that Joe has mentioned, I shall check out your recommendation as well. Sarah…I totally agree with you. There’s nothing like the real deal and an actual book is it. I just hope my friend was wrong and that there’s still hope for the writers out there.
oh Joe ! great advice ! Simone de Beauvoir is my fav’ author ! she’s wonderful, a great woman who did very important things, I admire her, she’s my model, she was so brilliant and smart !
Lany you MUST read “Mémoire d’une fille rangée” (sorry for the french title) from her … and all her books ! i’m sur you’ll like it.
yeah, I hope they’re wrong too but i’m sur there’re still people who like books and writting, it’s very rare but it does exist (hopefully) and we have to keep it going on even it’s more and more rare, those who like it can fight for this !
Joe, Everything Is Illuminated is one of my favorites. And is probably the exception to my rule about never seeing movies based on books I have cherished. It is a sweet, touching and funny movie that captures the feel of the book well. Love Medicene by Louise Erdrich, or ANYTHING by Louise Erdrich (I’ve read everything she’s written), but especially Love Medicene. How about a TDW book group?! Everyone is invited to my house for wine and books!
Jennifer…that sounds like fun. It would also be another way to help keep books alive. About a year ago, I attended a short writing class that was offered by the editor of our local newspaper. Most of the assignments were short stories and articles (which I also enjoy dabbling in). When the class ended, we were all supposed to get together at a fellow student’s house for a cookout. I didn’t go, but I wish I did.
……and after pondering on your idea, Jennifer, I must say that a TDW book group sounds way cooler and much more fun than Oprah’s book club. lol. And the wine….now I’m having one of those “ahhhh” moments. Love the idea.
