Thank you, Martine. I just try to enjoy life and find humor in most things. It sounds like you do the same. I've read a lot of your posts and you always seem hopeful and cheerful. Plus you have a good sense of humor.

Martine, I agree with you too. Most people can handle their alcohol pretty well, but I've known quite a few that can't. I've never once seen anybody trippin' out on people because of being high. Back to drinking.....when I drink, I'm the silly one. I've seen a lot of people use the cry card...and also seen a lot of people break out into fights. When I was referring to my own liquid courage, with one particular person, it was usually in the form of sarcasm. I would get so quick witted and my mouth would shoot off with random bouts of laughter because I was so good at it. He could barely finish a sentance before I blurted out another wisecrack. Then I got really creative and threw the gestures in with it...throwing all his beer out the window, purposely dropping his joint in a can of mountain dew (he wasn't happy about that one, lol),ripping the pocket off his pants. Ahh, good times. He actually handled everything pretty well. I think marijuana gives people patience and tollerance. It also gives you enough of a delay to think things through before reacting. Keep smiling, Martine, you seem like a very enthusiastic and fun person. The world needs a lot more of those qualities. It would be a better place.

Jennifer, what you said makes sense. You made some very good & true points. Like you, I don't smoke marijuana ( but I do smoke cigarettes & an occasional cigar) and I drink once in a while. I have seldomly smoked it, but the few times that I have, it made me remember why I don't usually smoke it. All it did for me was cause me to sit peacefully on my ass while drifting off into deep thought. I'd occasionally laugh out loud at my own thoughts... then I'd ask everyone in the room, "did I just say that?". Turns out I never really said much, if anything at all.... I just thought I did. Now when it comes to drinking, I'm a very fun-loving, happy, love to dance, & social drinker. I pretty much get along with everyone, well, except for one person. I'd been known to get pretty beligerant with him after a few drinks. My boyfriend, at the time, ( bless his heart) put up with so much from me. And do you know why? Because he was high. I'd hate to see how he'd have reacted if he wasn't! My point is, everyone has their own thing (whether it's to have fun, relax, cope, socialize...etc.) Atleast when people smoke, they don't usually get mean or bother anybody. Everyone needs some kind of an outlet.

It is a good cause, and not because I smoke (I don't), but because I think it is outrageous that as long as I behave responsibly I can enjoy a gin and tonic whenever I like, but my neighbor can be arrested if he smokes a joint in his backyard even if he a) isn't selling it to minors and b) isn't driving under the influence or doing anything else that could potentially harm someone. Where is the logic? These are archaic laws that were passed in the 1940s and need to be brought up to date with the modern world.

And don't get me started on medical marijuana use....which is "legal" in Oregon since 1999, but the red tape is so restrictive that most of the cancer patients I work with in a hospital setting die long before they can jump through all the hoops, pay the application fees and manage to grow their own plants. In the very least it takes months to get the proper documentation and plants big enough to harvest. In the meantime, people who suffer from chronic nausea or intractable pain are forced to break the law if this medicinal herb works for them. How humiliating.

This "comment" is getting way too long and veering dangerously close to soap box territory, but since we've been getting a peak at what Courtney is reading I would like to recommend an excellent book written by a psychiatrist named Dan Shapiro called "Mom's Marijuana". It is his true story about battling cancer and having his mother grow marijuana for him, a tea-totling lady who wouldn't dream of jaywalking let alone growing pot. But for her son, she does. It is a wonderful book.
