Zia Won, Hurray
gnathonic (næˈθɒnɪk)
— adj
literary deceitfully flattering; sycophantic[C17: from Latin gnathōnicus, from Gnathō, such a character in the Eunuchus, Roman comedy by Terence]
Zia won the OnPoint Community Credit Union Celebrity Spelling Bee last night, spelling “gnathonic,” which is such a damn fine word I wonder why I have never used it, such a cartoon villain word. (My dumb computer dictionary thinks it’s spelt wrong. Oh yeah, MacBook Pro, how would YOU spell it?? Oh, no suggestions? I thought so.)
Anyway, the bee brought out such Portland luminaries as Killer Dave, the president of the Blazers, and the new mayor Charlie Hales. This event was to benefit Schoolhouse Supplies, an award-winning nonprofit that supports public education in Portland by giving students and teachers free classroom supplies. Please check out their site, and if you can, please donate.

Celebrity Spelling Bee Tonight
I’ve never been a strong speller but I’ve been studying and will do my best for this good cause of providing school supplies for schools, teachers and students in need.
Wish me luck!
The Onpoint Community Credit Union Spelling Bee, presented by Comcast, will bring our community of supporters together to celebrate Schoolhouse Supplies and our growth and success over the last twelve years. This evening of intelligent fun, held on Thursday, January 31, 2013 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Portland Art Museum, will bring together past Spelling Bee winners, along with new challengers, all vying for the title of Portland’s Spelling Champion.
With the help of local businesses and the support of the community, this has become one of Portland’s most anticipated events. In addition to the Spelling Bee, a silent auction, raffle and special appeal help raise vital funding for Schoolhouse Supplies.

Public Water Public Vote Event October 7 in Portland
I have worked my tail off bringing bands together for something I feel very strongly about. In the last week I’ve organized an event that will bring together 17 bands and 3 DJs to stand united in support of democracy and our right to vote. Our right to make decisions collectively as a community and a vibrant independent city. This event will represent Portland in her truest form, and send a message to our government that the artists and citizens of Portland are willing to stand up to them when they are not serving our city and her people they way they should be. Besides that, it’s gonna be one helluva fun mini festival! Tons of music and performance artists, food carts, raffles and all kinds of creative, good spirited, family fun!

Who: This event is being organized by Zia McCabe with The Dandy Warhols in cooperation with Clean Water Portland PAC. Clean Water Portland is leading the campaign to qualify the Portland City Council’s water fluoridation decision for a public vote. The campaign is working to gather the 20,000 valid signatures needed to qualify the referendum measure that will give the public a chance to vote.
What & Why: An all day, three stage concert to promote the public’s right to vote on the controversial water fluoridation decision recently announced by the Portland City Council. The event is aimed at highlighting why the City Council’s decision, which was directly contrary to three previous public votes in Portland opposing water fluoridation, should be put to voters once again through a citizen referendum. Petition signatures will be collected and all funds raised will be donated to Clean Water Portland for their signature gathering effort.
