Blackbird
June 26th, 2009Hey. Since the tragic news of Mr. Jackson’s passing yesterday, we here at The Odditorium have been besieged with requests of the status of The Dandys’ cover of The Beatles’ “Blackbird”, as foretold, and some would say, fore-promised (that’s probably not a word), in the title track of our 2003 album Welcome To The Monkey House. Please note that this was not an anticipated event and we had no cover of “Blackbird” all rearin’ to go. I mean, how could we? With both Courtney and Fathead currently out of town we cannot say when we will be able to get to this cover of “Blackbird”, but we will, as soon as we are all together and able, since we have come to find that it means so much to a lot of you.
We thank you for your continued love and patience. Much love back, on behalf of The Dandy Warhols and all of us here at the Odditorium in Portland.

Funny, I thought it was when Lou Diamond Phillips dies, and the cover was “LaBamba.” I’ll re-listen.
MJ I never bought an album but respect the genius and talent you were. With genius always seems to come demons and you hade your share RIP man.
Having all of the other albums I recently purchased Earth to The Dandy Warhols, congrats on another fine album guys.

I came of age listening to Off The Wall, and closed down many a nightclub dancing to Thriller in my young frisky days. Like many gifted people Mr. Jackson was a messed up dude, but the music he made in his early adulthood was magic for my generation.
Stay centered with feet firmly on the ground Dandies. Your fans love you.
I googled “Dandy Warhols covering Blackbird Michael Jackson” after discussing putting that song on our Michael Jackson Tribute CD. Funny how that took us right here.! Glad the Dandys are on top of things. We also need Hollywood Blvd by the Kinks, Live Forever by Oasis and Mr. Psycho by Space. We just in the ideas phase at the moment.
(Also for those lucky enough to own the “Hustler White” Soundtrack, maybe that version of Don’t Fear the Reaper).
On Friday when I said “Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and ….Who will be the third?” I did not expect Michael Jackson to die although he did fulfill two of the classifications I set out. Television Star and 70’s Icon (to complete the trilogy). Although some could argue that was already fulfilled with David Carradine of Kung Fu fame.
Anyway………..

I always thought the reference was to The Wurzels ‘Blackbird Song’. Could the Dandys cover that instead?

I heard in MJ’s will the Beatles back catalogue will go to Paul McCartney. You might have to sub him in your lyrics if you don’t get the right to cover it.
Ha, funny that you posted that Gothman. I jokingly wrote on the Dandys myspace something about it the day of, but, haha, yeah, didn’t expect the cover to be ready, MJ’s death was surely surprising. I still would love to hear a cover of the Beatles again one day from the Dandys. I still enjoy the 8 Days A Week cover a lot. : )
Oh, and if the back catalogue is going back to Paul McCartney, I think Anton already took care of the “subbing him” in the amazing opener of “My Bloody Underground…”
