I Wish
A Fraction Of The Whole
Okay I’m only about seventy pages in but I keep feeling like this is my favorite book ever. About every other page I just get overwhelmed. Amazing. Jeez this guy is so deeply wise and funny as hell.

UPDATE 10/14/09: I just had a friend ask me what he should read next. Alright, let me just say again, read this book. It is still blowing my mind every day. Amazing in every way. Best book ever. Holy.

Edgar Allan Poe’s Funeral

Apparently not having had one when he died, Baltimoreans staged a funeral for the great/young/dead man Edgar Allan Poe this Sunday. I really would’ve liked to have been there in my turn of the century tux and topper with maybe just a little blood seeping from an open wound.
Here is the local newspaper page from the day of his death including his obit.
DREADFUL CALAMITY – We learn from a correspondent, that the Rev. James Nicols, of Caroline Conty, Md., who has for a long time been laboring under an aberation of mind, on Thursday last, shot dead Miss Julie Nichols. …
STRAYED from home on Friday, 5th instant, a COLORED BOY namde BILL, about ten years old, slightly marked with small pox. … All persons are warned not to harbor said boy, at the peril of the law…
DEATH OF EDGAR A. POE — We regret to learn that Edgar A. Poe, Esq., the distinguished American poet, scholar and critic, died in this city yesterday morning, after an illness of four or five days. This announcement, coming so sudden and unexpected, will cause poignant regret among all who admire genius, and have sympathies for the frailties too often attending it. Mr. Poe, we believe, was a native of this state, though reared by a foster father at Richmond, Va., where he lately spent some time on a visit. He was in the 38th year of his age.
FITS! FITS!! FITS!!! HART’S VEGETABLE EXTRACT is the only remedy for EPILEPSY, a FALLING SICKNESS, CONVULSIONS, SPASMS, &c. …
THE SEWING MACHINE, which attracted so much attention at the Fair, has been removed to the corner of Baltimore and South streets, where the public can witness its operation.

For Our Friend Matt Cwiertny
This is a photo of Matt Cwiertny, Brent and I.

Matt was an incredibly sweet person and a huge fan of our music. I’m so glad that Brent and I had the chance to meet and get to know him a littlebefore he lost his battle with T Cell Lymphoma(TCL). The last time I saw him was in June, we had dinner in Pomona, CA before our show at the Glass House. He was cheerful, friendly and so brave. It’s hard to meet someone so cool and know how hard they’re fighting for their life.

He will me missed. Rest easy Matt, no more suffering for you.

Courtney’s Movie Reviews: Three Of Em

(1931) Garbo is quite cool but its still just a goofy little ride featuring the goofiest dance number in the history of film, the poor dear. |

(1941) I love the Welsh, John Ford, Maureen O’Hara and Roddy Mcdowell but this is still a gruelling two hour bout with near suicidal depression any way you slice it. |

(2006) After recently touring the midwest I couldn’t help but think that everyone who came to our shows must feel like Luke Wilson in this movie at least a little bit every day except without the hijinks and hilarity.. |
