On songwriting: Bob Dylan said or something to the effect of “when ya find yerself in it get out as quick as you can”.
This Magnetic Fields song feels to me like an example of exactly that. Had he gotten dumped weeks or months earlier? Had he gone thru all the standard grief progressions ie anger, forgiveness, self blame, denial or whatever then arrived one day at the perfect moment with instrument in hand, phone unplugged and just got it all out? In one go? Well one day maybe I’ll find out.
Anyhoo I’m on my 6th listen in a row and every time it fucks me up n gets my heart racing and my head reeling. Wait stop reverse that. Or whatever. The first time I played it it made me well up. Fuggin weird how totally put me back in that space. Dumped. Phew. Well I think this might be the best song I’ve ever heard in my life. Right now I’m convinced of it.

Regarding Riders of the Purple Sage I’d have to say that the kamp/soap opera value ends up higher than it begins. Turns out Zane Grey is into Love. This book is dusty, dirty, dark and dangerous but when it comes to Love its written for a nine year old girl. From the 50’s.
If you can keep from getting snobby about the Love and a couple other minor flaws, all in all its an awesome ride and man is it a page burner. Rocks in a classic way and has a fuxton of atmosphere. Its ain’t an American classic for nothin.
